Before we put our name on it, we watched this fabric survive for 23 years.
Geoff's first shade sail, built in 2001 — replaced in 2024. The basis for everything we now make.
2017 — 16 Years On
Pictured here at 16 years old — still up, still working. Seven more years to go before it came down.
This sail was Geoff's first independent commission — 2001, while he was still an apprentice at another company. As only proud parents would, his parents put their hands up to be the guinea pigs on Geoff's workmanship — and what a test it turned out to be.
We didn't think of it as a test piece at the time.
Looking back, that's exactly what it was.
For 23 years it hung over a North Queensland pool — through tropical sun, salt air, storm seasons, and humid summers. (Coming down only for cyclones and maintenance.) It needed restitching twice in that time — and that's a large part of why we changed the thread we use. The fabric itself never gave up.
By the time we were building sails full-time, we weren't just trusting the manufacturer's spec sheet. We had years of accidental field data hanging in Geoff's parents' backyard.
When his parents finally took the original sail down in 2024 — to refresh their pool yard with new tiles and a new pole — the fabric was still going. It had outlasted the structure holding it up.
Honest Answers
The questions we get most often, answered straight.
How is GP Shade Sails different from the cheap ones online?
Three things, mostly.
The fabric. Most online sails use retail shade cloth — basic woven fabric you can buy by the metre at hardware stores. We use professional-grade Z16 and E32 fabric — the same grades councils, schools, and contractors specify. Heavier weave, up to 99% UV block (colour dependent), built to last.
The hardware and stitching. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel corner fittings, seatbelt-grade webbing reinforcement, and Coats Helios P thread — a premium bonded thread engineered to outlast the fabric.
Who makes it. Every sail is cut and stitched in our own workshop in Mackay by Geoff and Paula — not imported ready-made, not outsourced. Geoff is a QBCC-licensed shade sail builder who still installs shade sails himself, so the sails are made by someone who knows what it's like to hang one.
Cheap online sails work… until they don't. A lot of the sails on our repair bench are ones that came apart a few years in. Ours are built not to.
How does ordering actually work?
There are two ways, depending on what you need.
Standard sizes — order straight from the site. Pick your shape, size, fabric grade and colour, and check out. No forms, no waiting. Just make sure you've read the size guide first: the size shown is the finished fabric size, so you'll need to allow room at each corner for hardware. If you're unsure, send us your measurements and we'll check them before you order.
Custom sails — start with an enquiry. If your fixing points are uneven, you need more than four corners, or nothing in our standard range fits, we work it out with you:
1. Tell us about your space. Fill out our enquiry form — your shape, rough dimensions, and a couple of photos of the area. Rough is fine at this stage.
2. Get a ballpark quote. Geoff reviews every enquiry personally, usually between jobs — allow 3–5 business days for your price guide. A real person, not an instant robot quote.
3. Happy to proceed? We send you a measuring guide. Once your measurements come back, we draw the sail up and lock in a fixed price. Nothing gets cut until you've approved both.
We ask for detailed measurements after you know the price range, not before — no point sending you up a ladder with a tape measure until you know the job suits your budget.

What's the difference between Z16 and E32 fabric?
Z16 is our standard — the fabric we reach for on the large majority of what we make, residential and commercial alike.
It's a 200 GSM professional-grade shade cloth, knitted high-density polyethylene (HDPE), UV-stabilised. It blocks up to 99% of UV (colour dependent), comes in a wide range of designer colours, and has 15 years of documented weather endurance testing behind it. Unless your span is unusually large or your site unusually exposed, Z16 is almost certainly the right call. You don't need to overthink it.
E32 is the heavier alternative — 320 GSM, denser weave, significantly higher tear and breaking strength, less stretch over time. It's a specialist choice for very large spans, exposed sites, and demanding installations where the extra strength earns its place. It's not a "better" sail — just a different tool for a harder job.
One thing worth knowing about colour: UV protection varies by colour. Darker colours block the most, and the lightest colours noticeably less. Every colour on our product pages shows its own figures — select a swatch and you'll see the UV block and shade percentage for that specific colour.
Still not sure? Ask us. If we think you've picked the wrong grade for your span, tension, or sun exposure, we'll tell you before we cut a thing. That's our job.
How long will my shade sail actually last?
Honest answer: a properly made shade sail, looked after, should give you many years of service before fabric replacement. The cheap ones online often give up in just a few.
The fabric itself holds up remarkably well. In independent 15-year weather endurance testing, a Z16 sample left exposed to real weather for fifteen years still blocked 95.1% of UV and retained close to 80% of its original strength.
What usually fails first is everything else:
The thread. This is the hidden killer. Most sails fail at the seams long before the fabric does. We use Coats Helios P — a premium bonded thread engineered to outlast the fabric.
The hardware. 316 marine-grade stainless steel turnbuckles, chains, and corner fittings. Anything less rusts, seizes, or snaps in coastal air.
The install. Even the best sail won't last if it's slack, tensioned wrong, rubbing against a gutter, or anchored to a fence post that wasn't built for it.
And what you do in a storm. The most common way to lose a good sail is leaving it up through weather that should have brought it down. That one's entirely within your control.
Care is simple — a wash with sugar soap and a soft brush every six to twelve months, no bleach or pressure washing, and re-tension as needed. What about cyclones, storms, and high winds?
For day-to-day weather — storms, gusty winds, summer rain — a properly tensioned sail takes it in its stride. We make them in the tropics, for the tropics, and we watch our own installs come through wet season after wet season.
For severe weather — cyclone warnings or a Bureau of Meteorology warning for destructive winds — take the sail down. Shade sail fabric isn't engineered to withstand cyclonic conditions, and that's true of every fabric shade structure sold in Australia regardless of who made it. Three reasons it matters:
1. Even a perfectly built sail puts serious load on whatever it's anchored to. Your fence post, eave, or pergola has limits.
2. Wind-borne debris — a tree branch, a flying trampoline — will tear any fabric.
3. The fastest way to lose a sail you've had for years is to leave it up in a cyclone.
Take it down early. Warnings usually give you a day or more, and a sail is far easier to remove in calm conditions than in rising wind. If you've run out of time and it's already blowing, leave it — nothing on your property is worth being up a ladder for in those conditions.
Taking a sail down is a quick job once you've done it once, and it's part of why we build with a webbing edge rather than a cable. We send instructions with every sail, and we're only an email away if you want a walk-through.
What thread do you use, and why does it matter?
We stitch every sail with Coats Helios P — a premium bonded, UV-resistant thread that costs us considerably more than standard thread.
Here's why we made the switch. Our workshop restitches shade sails every year — sails that have come apart at the seams while the fabric itself was still perfectly good. The fabric was built to last. The thread gave up years too early. The customer thought the whole sail was dead.
We used to restitch the occasional one of our own, too. That's a large part of why we changed.
After seeing it enough times, we moved to Coats Helios P on every sail we make — and since then, we haven't had one come back for restitching.
Helios P is engineered to match the lifespan of the fabric, so the stitching outlasts the sail rather than failing before it. We don't cut corners on the bit that holds the whole thing together.
